Thank you to all our parents who were able to join us on Friday. We were so happy to spend the afternoon with you all!

We wrapped up our unit of structures of life/food chains by dissecting owl pellets to determine what kinds of prey our owls had eaten. Our small scientists had so much fun and were able to determine owls eat things such as mice, shrew, and voles.
Congratulations to our students who earned their AR pins for the first nine weeks. These students met their point goals, while maintaining an average of 85% or above mastery on their tests. Not only did they receive a pin at the awards ceremony, but they were also treated to popsicles on the playground one afternoon!
Students played a game outside to simulate a food chain in the environment. Yellow jerseys were grasshoppers, green jerseys were frogs, and red jerseys were hawks. Students debated scenarios that created a stable, sustainable food chain.
After working for several days on division, students jig-sawed into groups to each study a different story problem. They highlighted important information, identified context clues that showed us this was division, wrote equations, and drew pictures to solve. They then went back to their tables and took turns being the expert and teaching the rest of the group. It was a great day for our mathematicians! I believe we have some teachers in the making in this group! : )
Each week 3rd grade classes compete for the most points, while maintaining their accuracy. The winner is awarded the AR trophy for the week ... and bragging rights! The first week of the year was captured by Mrs. Taff's class!
Today, Explorers enjoyed viewing the solar eclipse through our special glasses. We also learned all about the Great American Eclipse in class and watched videos of past US total eclipses.
Science has been all about seeds! Students kicked off our unit with a seed search; identifying ways that seeds are alike and different in various fruits.
Our first week together is in the books, and what a great one it was! Thank you for sharing your children with us. We know it's going to be a fantastic year, and we look forward to getting to know them (and you too!) better.
